South Tyrol's Krampus Tradition
In South Tyrol and much of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, winter isn't just about St. Nicholas, the Christ Child, Father Christmas and the like. The Krampus tradition is alive and well – terrifying figures meant to drive away evil spirits and put naughty children back on the right path. In the many Krampus parades held across the region, they show off their elaborate wooden masks and costumes, creating a real spectacle for young and old. But behind the masks are passionate Krampus fans who enthusiastically prepare for these events every year!
